Beetle

Clockwork beetle, standard pattern

Blued-steel shell over a brass spine, six clawed legs. Most of every level is made of these, and they get tougher the deeper you go.

Armor
1 to 3 hits
Speed
1 row a turn
Bite
1 castle damage a turn
Gait
Straight, sometimes one lane over
First sighted
Level 1

Field notes

  1. Most turns it steps straight down. Sometimes it angles one lane to the side. The claw prints it leaves show which way it went.
  2. In the bottom row it gets a red chevron: next turn it climbs the castle. Hit it first.
  3. Up on the wall it chews every turn. Any ball that reaches the castle rolls along the top and knocks it.

Fast beetle

Clockwork beetle, long-leg pattern

A slim hull on long, jointed legs. It covers two rows a turn, so it reaches the castle in half the time.

Armor
1 hit
Speed
2 rows a turn
Bite
1 castle damage a turn
Gait
Two rows, sometimes one lane over
First sighted
Level 3

Field notes

  1. One hit drops it. The trouble is landing that hit before it reaches the wall.
  2. A splitter covers three lanes at once, the easiest way to catch one you can't line up.
  3. Tar freezes it for a turn, which buys you a whole extra shot.

Armored beetle

Clockwork beetle, armored pattern

Thick riveted plates over a heavy body, rolling on six wheels. Slow, predictable and hard to stop.

Armor
4 hits
Speed
1 row a turn
Bite
2 castle damage a turn
Gait
Straight down its lane, always
First sighted
Level 9

Field notes

  1. Wheels don't turn, so it never leaves its lane. You always know where it'll be next.
  2. It leaves no claw prints, just a straight road to the castle.
  3. The iron ball does double damage and goes straight through, so two iron hits crack it.

Boss beetle

Clockwork beetle, command pattern

The largest beetle in the field. Three brass gears turn in an open back, and amber optics glow under the brow. One ends every chapter.

Armor
15 to 40 hits
Speed
1 row every other turn
Bite
3 castle damage a turn
Weak point
The gears: double damage
Escort
Drops a minion every 3 turns
First sighted
Level 6

Field notes

  1. Aim for the gears. Hits on its back do double damage.
  2. Its minions fall apart the moment it dies, so the boss is always the real target.
  3. Its health bar sits at the top of the screen. The boss-breaker does 6 damage to it, or 12 if it lands on the gears.
